The 11th Song

Hi all,

Two weeks late this month with my free song, but I'm glad I took the extra time to tweak it.

Over on the left (or in yr inbox if you're already on the list), you'll find my cover of the Tom Waits tune 'Clap Hands', originally from his seminal 1985 album 'Rain Dogs'. This is the song (and album) that got me into Waits.

Hope you dig my version.

Some news

Hi all.

Recently I was fortunate enough to have my music featured on 'Projections', an excellent national photography competition.

My song 'Stealing Shadows' was paired with 'Mirror Mirror' - a stunning series of images from a brilliant young photographer named Emma Rose Sailah. Emma and I subsequently decided it would be a good idea to put this collaboration online.

You can check it out on Vimeo HERE, or on YouTube HERE.

Special thanks must go to Carla Orsatti for the opportunity.

In other news, I've got a show coming up at the Factory Floor in Marrickville on Jan 17, supporting Melbourne singer/songwriter Gabriel Lynch for his album launch. You can pre-purchase tix for only $10 HERE.

Meanwhile, I'm working intensely on the 11th song in my song-a-month project (which is already a week late!). Should be complete sometime over the next few days.

Thanks for listening/watching,
Ed

The 10th Song + news on my album

Well, the end of the year is nigh, which means the end of my song-a-month project is also nigh!

The 10th tune, a track called 'Balloon', is now up for download via this page, or in yr inbox if you're on the list.

I'm also over the moon to announce that the tremendous Laughing Outlaw Records (http://www.laughingoutlaw.com.au) will be releasing my debut album in early 2012.

Good times.

The 9th Song

Hey all.

Well this song is a good coupla weeks late but the great thing about self-imposed deadlines is that they're made to be broken!

This month I've done something a bit different. About 2 years ago, my brother Lloyd and I started messing around with some more electronic-based music. Now we're finally ready to share some of it. The name of the project is People Physics and the song we've just dropped is called 'Nostalgia'. I sang on it and played a few odds and ends, Lloyd composed and performed most of the music and there's a couple of guests on this particular track - thanks goes to Nick Langley for providing extra guitar and Mish Havlikova for providing backing vocals.

Plug your email address in over on the left to grab it, or check your inbox if you're already on the list!

Manic Monday

By golly, there's a lot going on!

Sydney peeps - I'm playing a record fair that FBi Radio are holding this Sun 25th Sep at the Petersham Bowling Club. Also performing are Matt Corby, Rainbow Chan and a bunch of other great acts. I'll be onstage at 3pm, it's only $5 and all ages (with a parent or guardian).

Additionally, just got word that my music is being showcased on 'Projections' this year, an excellent photography initiative which also features tunes from Oliver Tank, Dead Letter Chorus and Guerre to name a few. There are screenings being held around the country, and I was planning on heading along to the Sydney one at Paddington's Chauvel cinema on 28th Sep. More info here.

Last but certainly not least, I'm excited to announce that Cogel, the band I drum in, will be opening for Gotye at his sold out show in Melbourne's Forum Theatre on the night of Oct 2. Check out some of Cogel's music on facebook by clicking here.

Hope I can find time to finish my song for the month this month!

The 7th song

It's done and over there on the left. It's a couple of days late but hey, these things take time.

This month is something a bit different - I've done a cover of the song 'Animal' by Miike Snow. I'm actually working on a full covers EP for later in the year, so I hope you enjoy this little taster of what's to come.

Thanks to Bec & Jac Richardson for singing backing vox.

And ta for listening.

The 6th Song

Hope you're all well and staying warm. The 6th song in my 'free-song-a-month' project is complete (better late than never!). It's called 'With Ease'. By now you may know the drill - if you're on my mailing list already, it'll be in your inbox. If not, sign up over there on the left to get the track.

Been playing this one live for a while now and I'm really happy with this recording of it, but I'll let you be the judge. You might think it's horrendous!

Special thanks to my brother Lloyd for playing bass on it, and Nic Cogels for singing backing vox and adding piano.

Cheers for listening.

The 5th Song

It's the last Sunday in May, which means the fifth track in my self-imposed 'free-song-a-month' project is due. It'll be in your inbox if you're on my mailing list. If not, enter your email address over there on the left to get it.

I cut it really fine this month! This song didn't exist at all yesterday. It was entirely written, recorded and mixed today. Nearly drove me mad getting it done in time.

I've based it around a guitar idea that's been kicking around in my head for the past couple of years.

Thanks for listening,
Ed

P.S. Thanks to all that came to the Vanguard gig. I had a really fantastic time.

Talented people

Word up peeps. I recently went to Brisbane with some friends and upon returning felt compelled to blog about these particular friends, as they're doing great creative things that are well worth broader attention.

My friend Kyla is a designer of stunning women's clothing. She recently launched her website - www.kylacrozier.com. You can look at a couple of her collections there and I'm pretty sure you can just email her if you're interested in anything.

Another friend of mine runs an excellent website that does detailed reviews of video clips (www.musicvidkid.com). She's super prolific and a very astute writer. Check it out.

New song

Yesterday was the last Sunday of the month, which means I finished a new song and it's now up for free download if you join my mailing list over there on the left.

This one's called 'Strange Context' and it was written, recorded and mixed all within the past week. Everything about it is so recent that I don't have any objective perspective on it. Have never played it live and it feels somewhat different to my other stuff.

Would love to know what you think.

Happy holidays.
Ed

More YouTubery

This past week, I had a good chuckle at the below....

This last one's as impressive as it is amusing...

The 3rd Song

If you're on my mailing list, there should now be a free new song from me in your inbox. Otherwise, put your email address in over there on the left to get it if you're not.

This one's 'Pickpockets'.

Been playing it live for a little while now, but I'm particularly proud of this new recorded version.

I sang and played acoustic guitar and xylophone. Nic Cogels sang backing vox, played elec guitar, ebow and percussion.

Might have to work on improving the live arrangement now...

The 2nd song

Today's the last Sunday of the month, which means track #2 in my 'song-a-month-for-2011' project is here. It's called 'Renegades (A Song About Monsters)'.

Those already on my mailing list should have it in their inbox now. If you're not yet on the list, stick your email address in over there to get it for free, plus a new song every month for the rest of the year.

I'll post some thoughts on the making of this track soon, but right now I'm exhausted. It's 11pm and I spent a large chunk of the wkend getting the thing finished.

Good night.

My brain feels like a squishy sea creature...

Word up peeps. Thanks to all who've downloaded 'Stealing Shadows' so far - was actually really chuffed with the response. It's still over there on the left of this page if you haven't yet, but I'll be replacing it with another song on Sunday week, so get crack 'a lackin'.

And if you wanna give me some feedback on the track, click here and drop a review. Perhaps you felt like you could have mixed it better yourself, or maybe the sampled insects made you go a bit postal...

So anyhoo, I've been running all over the place as of late and wanted to share some shtuff.

Went to Laneway the other day and saw a bunch of great bands. My personal faves were Local Natives, Warpaint, Foals, me mate Gotye and Sydney's Wim, who I've been following for a while. It is crazy that Wim were able to deliver one of the day's very best sets on a bill containing internationally renowned acts and in spite of their midday time slot. Check them out here.

Speaking of other bands, some of you may not know that I moonlight as drummer in a band called Cogel. Cogel has just finished our first video and I think it's bloody brilliant. I can say this comfortably cos I had absolutely nothing to do with its creation. That honour goes to Chocolate Fish Productions and Cogel's lead singer Nic. I urge you to check it out here.

Cogel is also offering a free download (it's the cool thing to do these days) of our new track 'Roundabout' via our website - click on the bottom right hand corner.

What else can I bombard you with while I'm rambling on here? Well, there is one other thing. That show I did at Cafe Lounge last week is streaming on the net here.

Obviously you don't get the whole vibe (eg. you can't see the enormous 'Whole Lotta Rosie' prop that I stole from AC/DC, nor do you get to see the fully grown manatee having a drink at the bar), but it might give you some idea as to what the gig was like.

Enough nonsense from me.
Adios.

A New Song Every Month

As mentioned previously, this year I'll be releasing a new song for free download on the last Sunday of every month.

If you join my mailing list by plugging your email address in over there on the left, you'll receive a link to this month's tune 'Stealing Shadows', plus 11 other songs over the course of the year.

I recorded and mixed 'Stealing Shadows' with some help from my friend Nic Cogels between the hours of around midnight and 3:30am during one uber-productive home studio session recently. I think we became a bit delirious/insane towards the end of it... Enjoy.

Also, my first show for the year will be at Cafe Lounge - 277 Goulburn St Darlinghurst, at 7:30 on Tuesday 8 Feb. Free entry. Maxine Kauter Band also playing.

Some nice words

Prolific music blogger Andy McLean has got me at #15 on his list of fave 2010 tracks. Sure, he's a friend of mine (and probably biased as such), but even still, it's an honour to be included on such a well-compiled list.

Check it out HERE.

A Fairly Ambitious New Year's Resolution

Happy 2011. Going to be a busy one for me.

I've decided to attempt to release a new song for free download on the last Sunday of every month. The first one's already finished, and I'll be putting it up online Sun 30th Jan.

Wish me luck!
